Principle Two (of 12)
The ____________ Principle

I can find ultimate purpose in life only by learning the essentials of trusting God as my ultimate problem solver. I hereby resolve to choose this course of action daily, and in God’s power I consider it done.

Knowing God… Through Knowing His Names
Knowing God — A Sevenfold Biblical Sampler

“Jehovah” Defined:
“The self-existent, eternal being.”
(From the Hebrew YHWH, referred to as a “tetragrammation” — a combination of four consonants with no vowels, and therefore never pronounced by early Jews.)

Thus, Yahweh, or Jehovah, is an educated guess as to what the Hebrew would sound like.

1. Jehovah __________

Scripture:
Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim. And Moses said to Joshua, “Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand”… And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed… And Moses built an altar and called its name, The-Lord-Is-My-Banner… — Exodus 17:8-9, 11, 15 (NKJV)

Meaning: The Lord our _________________.
“Divine ______________!”

2. Jehovah _____________

Scripture:
Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you…” But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” Then he said, “Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.” So the two of them went together… Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.” — Genesis 22:1-2, 7-8, 13-14 (NKJV)

3. Jehovah _____________

Scripture:
Now the Angel of the Lord came and sat under the terebinth tree which was in Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, while his son Gideon threshed wheat in the winepress, in order to hide it from the Midianites. And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him, and said to him, “The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor!”… So he said to Him, “O my Lord, how can I save Israel? Indeed my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.” And the Lord said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat the Midianites as one man.”… Now Gideon perceived that He was the Angel of the Lord. So Gideon said, “Alas, O Lord God! For I have seen the Angel of the Lord face to face.” Then the Lord said to him, “Peace be with you; do not fear, you shall not die.” So Gideon built an altar there to the Lord, and called it The-Lord-Is-Peace. To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. — Judges 6:11-12, 15-16, 22-24 (NKJV)

Meaning: The Lord our ____________.
“Divine __________________!”

4. Jehovah _______________

“Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign and prosper, And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. Meaning: The Lord our __________________.
“Divine ____________________!”

6. Jehovah _____________

Scripture:
So Moses brought Israel from the Red Sea; then they went out into the Wilderness of Shur. And they went three days in the wilderness and found no water. Now when they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore the name of it was called Marah. And the people complained against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” So he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. When he cast it into the waters, the waters were made sweet. There He made a statute and an ordinance for them, and there He tested them, and said, “If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.” — Exodus 15:22-26 (NKJV)

In what ways does “knowing the names of God” increase our trust in Him? Which of the seven “Jehovah” names of God most reflects a need or desire of your heart at the present time, and why?

“Pray back” to the Lord something that especially spoke to your heart during this lesson. Express specifically how you might “know God” more intimately through one of the names that describes who He is and the underlying promise related to that name.

The Trust Principle

Principle Primary Passage…
Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people from this time forth and forever. — Psalm 125:1-2 (NKJV)

Talk Back Time: (Share what you’ve learned with your small group.)
We are admonished in Proverbs 3:5 to “trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding.” What do you think the author of Proverbs meant in saying “lean not to your own understanding”? How do you think trust differs from simply having faith to believe in something?

Pray Back Time: (Pray what you’ve learned in your small group.)
Select one or more of the seven names of God shared in this teaching. As you view these names as individual “care buckets” into which you can cast a specific care, name that care in prayer as you mentally place it in the appropriate bucket and then give that bucket to the Lord.
