The Model of Holiness

The Model of Holiness: Five Distinctives

Scripture:
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. — Hebrews 4:15 (NIV)

Timeless Insights
“Prayer will make a man cease from sin, or sin will entice a man to cease from prayer.” — John Bunyan

Distinctive One: Holy living is ______________ Jesus.

Scripture:
Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.” — John 14:23 (NIV)

Distinctive Two: Holy living is ________________ Jesus.

Scripture:
So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image. — 2 Corinthians 3:18 (NLT)

Distinctive Three: Holy living is ____________ Jesus.

Scripture:
Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. — Philippians 2:4-7 (NIV)

Distinctive Four: Holy living is ______________ Jesus.

Scripture:
For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God… — Colossians 1:9-10 (NIV)

Distinctive Five: Holy living is ________________ Jesus.

Scripture:
For I fully expect and hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I will continue to be bold for Christ, as I have been in the past. And I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die. — Philippians 1:20 (NLT)

Timeless Insights
“He who has learned to pray has learned the greatest secret of a holy and happy life.” — William Law

Afterthoughts...Ponder and Pray

Ponder Points:
Discuss (or ponder) why you think Jesus is our supreme example of holy living. How do you think Christians can be more plain in their lifestyles so as to be more like Jesus?

Prayer Points:
Using one or more of the six definitions of holiness (i.e. complete, pious, gentle, undefiled, upright and plain), construct a prayer asking God to help you be more like Jesus in your Christian walk.
